The Havoc of Marcos' Dictatorship

On Sept. 21,1972, Marcos  declared Martial Law.He ablolished and arrested senators, congressmen, media men, civic leaders, student leaders, and even Constitutional Convention Delegates conceived by him to be either leftist or anti-martial law.

The Constitutional Convention Delegates elected by the country's registered voters in June 1971,drafted the 1973 Constitution and presented it to Marcos, but instead of submitting it to the people in a plebiscite, he submitted it to the Citiens' Assembly which he himself created and announced that the 1973 Constitution has been approved on June 17, 1973.

The 1973 Constitution changed the form of our government from democratic system to parliamentary system.,however, he did not convene parliament ,and made the country's laws by means of presidential decrees..

In his decades of martial rule,as dictator, existed terrible poverty and misery, salvaging, disappearance, torture, incarceration, exile, economic plunder and moral degeneration. In his "golden era", were rooted the evils of those years, the money pocketed from every project, the cornering of percentage from contracts, anomaluos deals and biddings, monstrous loans, nationalization of the airline to cover the bills of the First Lady's sprees and jaunts abroad, the secret marshals, pornography, monopolizing coconut and sugar industry, the use of religion and art for political ends, poor quality of commodities, hastily built infrastructure resulting to catastrophes, as on a fateful day on December, Imelda's dream monument , the Experimental Cinema of the Philippines, collapsed before completion, burying over a hundred workers in concrete. She ordered to proceed with the work fast, so the workers shovelled in fresh concrete while they could still hear the moaning and groaning and crying for help of their fellows under their feet, and with tears in their eyes, they sang Christmas carols loudly as they worked to drown the voices of agony.Even today, at the CCP,the sea breeze wafts the moans from the secret tombs of laborers sacrificed to the gods of progress.

The devastation of the environment from rampant illegal logging and factory pollution, crony capitalization, the curse of foreign debts, polarization of the Church, trivial art and trivialization of culture, mark Dictator Marcos' worldwide notoriety in his impoverished Asian land. In Marcos and his family, there is absence of any expression of remorse and guilt. To this day, they believe no wrong had been done. The ignoramus and the sycophants fully believe them.
