July Significant Days

July 1, 1902 - The U.S. Congress enacted the bill for the establishment of the Philippine General Assembly.
July 3, 1892 - Dr. Jose Rizal founded the La Liga Filipina, a civic and peaceful association of patriotic citizens whose aims were:
  1. to unite the whole archipelago into one, compact,vigorous and homogenous body, 
  2. to protect the people against all forms of violence and injustices,and 
  3. to encourage education, agriculture and commerce. Its latin motto was "Unos inster omnium" which means,"one, like all".
July 3, 1896 - Marcelo H. del Pilar (Plaridel), patriot, propagandist and second editor of La Solidaridad, died in Barcelona, Spain.
July 4, 1902 - U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Gen. J.P. Sanger census director to make the first Philippine census.
July 4, 1946 - The United States granted its Philippine independence at impressive ceremonies at the Luneta, Manila. To this day, it is known as the Philippine-American Friendship Day.
July 5, 1945 - Gen. Douglas MacArthur proclaimed  Philippine Islands' liberation from the Japanese.
July 7, 1864 - Isabelo de los Reyes,the founder of the first labor union in the Philippines, the Union Obrero Democratico, was born in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. When he was elected Councilor of Manila, he changed the names of the streets in the city to the names of Filipino heroes.
July 7, 1892 - Dr. Jose Rizal was exiled in Dapitan. On that night, Andres Bonifacio founded the Katipunan.
July 12, 1946 - President Manuel A. Roxas created the Council of State to advise the president on important matters affecting the welfare of the country.
July 13, 1860 - Birth of Anacleto del Rosario, the greatest Filipino chemist who discovered a new process of making better wines out of nipa palm alcohol
July 22 - World Health Day
July 23, 1864 - Apolinario Mabini, the "Sublime Paralytic" and "Brains of the Revolution" was born in Talaga, Tanauan, Batangas.
July 23, 1932 - Gov. Gen. Leonard Wood and Filipino leaders led by Senate President Manuel L. Quezon, clashed on policy matters, which resulted to the mass resignation of Filipino cabinet members. Quezon said: "I would prefer a government run like hell by Filipinos than a government run like heaven by Americans." Gov. Wood, a military man, was recalled to the U.S. and replaced by a non-military man.
July 25, 1918 - Tomas Claudio, from Morong, Rizal, became the first Filipino hero to die in World War I, when he was killed in action in the battle of Chateau, Thierry, France. He fought as a private soldier and was the flag bearer of the American flag under the U.S. Army. He said, "I wish to fight for America and for democracy". In his last letter to his sister, he wrote: "If fortune is against me, you will have the consolation of knowing that you have a brother who knows how to fulfill his duty to his country."
Jul 27, 1946 - The remains of Pres. Quezon arrived in Manila from the United States. During the war, his body was buried in the Arlington Memorial Cemetery, a cemetery exclusively for great military and civil leaders.
